The differences between the “before” and “after” photos that I recently published of Eakins' “The Gross Clinic”—pre- and post-conservation—were indeed “startling,” as I had opined in both CultureGrrl and the Huffington Post.

But even more startling was the museum's subsequent admission to me and other art journalists that it had sent us the wrong images. (See, for example, the correction appended at the bottom of this NY Times article.) The images that I had posted on July 20 were described to me the previous day by the museum's press office as “images of the painting both before and after it was restored.”

Not so.

The museum now says that that these two images, while dramatically dissimilar, are both photos of the painting BEFORE it was restored. Here's the head-scratching explanation for this, sent to me by Lindsay Warner of the museum's press office:

The “before” and “after” images on CultureGrrl are both pre-conservation images. Your “before” image was
taken by our in-house Rights and Reproductions Department, which produces
photos for the purpose of press and publications. It is the photo we were providing up
until last month, when the restoration was complete.

The “after” photo
is a better-quality and color-corrected pre-conservation [emphasis added] image….Your “after” image was
taken by our Conservation Photography Department, which produces images
for conservation records. The photo taken by Conservation most
accurately represents how the painting appeared before [emphasis added] treatment.

In that case, the photo that, until last month, had been sent to journalists must have been a very inaccurate reproduction of “The Gross Clinic,” since it differs so significantly from the one that has now been dispatched to us as the truer image.

So, art-lings, let's now try to sort out the three “Gross” photos that have, at various times, landed in my inbox.

Here's the pre-conservation image of “The Gross Clinic” that journalists, until last month, were routinely sent by the museum—the one that I had posted as the “before” photo:

Here's what the museum now says is the more accurate pre-conservation image, as validated by its Conservation Department. It's the one that I had erroneously called a post-conservation image, relying on the museum's say-so:

And here (we can only hope) is the painting as it looks today, after its treatment by the conservators:

Now I can understand why Philadelphia Inquirer art critic Edward Sozanski wrote last Sunday that the differences in the painting, pre- and post-treatment, “aren't startling”—a seeming rebuttal to my own headline announcing its “Startling Restoration.”

All of this talk about photo reproductions may be much more than you want to know. But I take very seriously my commitment to accuracy, and I can only say, in this instance, that I was relying on what I thought was an unimpeachable source—the museum itself, which apologized to me (and, I presume, to others) for its unfortunate mix-up.

What I need to do, of course, is make the roadtrip to Philadelphia, to eyeball the newly altered masterpiece myself—on display in a focus exhibition (to Jan. 9).

Why did Microsoft get into the mouse business in the first place? To create a reference point of how a mouse should interact with a PC. Remember how at the start other manufacturers labeled their mice 'microsoft mouse compatible' until it was so assumed that nobody even bothered. Now Microsoft/Intel wants to make multitouch a big part of Windows 7 in order to make it be able to work well on tablets. But most people will still be using Windows 7 on laptops and desktops and are still used to using a mouse for doing most things, for which it works quite well. What kind of device would allow them to access their screen either as a mouse or with multitouch gestures like pinch to zoom without having to replace their existing monitor? Umm. maybe a flat mouse with a touch-sensitive center? Call it a touchmouse. Now, Microsoft doesn't care whether it dominates touchmouse sales any more than it cares about mouse sales. What it does care about is that the one created by logitech and the one created by H-P and the one created by Dell and the one created by some generic chinese company (who is the one actually manufacturing all the others too) all play well with Windows 7.

Hey guys so the other day I was on my laptop and it was working perfectly fine. The next day I notice that it wouldn’t shut down. So I pushed the power button to shut it down. Then the next day I try to boot it up and it says some thing with file or hardware been damaged. So it recommended I started it in repair mode. But then nothing happened. It just stays black with the arrow cursor. It won’t even start in normal mode. Can someone please help right now I can’t afford another laptop please and thanks!

Answer by snoofy 10A lot of pc’s come with restore disks, the Sony Vaio I recently worked on had a recovery partition on the hard drive. This is what worked for me:

Reboot your laptop while holding down the F10 key down for 7 – 10 seconds. A Recovery Partition will appear. You may get an “edit boot options” screen. If so, press enter to launch the recovery tools. After launching the recovery tools, choose the option to Restore C drive to start the recovery and follow the on screen instructions to complete the recovery successfully.

In Computex 2010, the LG’ introduced UX10, a tablet PC with Windows 7. Apparently, the South Korean manufacturer plans to bring on the market a tablet PC equipped with the Google Android operating system, sometime in the fourth quarter.

Obviously, such ultra-portables are very popular and all companies are currently trying to find a place on this market. In the case of LG Electronics, the second largest producer of electronics, as profits, from South Korea, the movement to introduce an Android equipped tablet PC, is motivated by the need to avoid remaining behind his rival, Samsung Electronics, the largest electronics producer in South Korea today. Samsung has already announced Galaxy Tab, 7-inch display tablet PC with Android, scheduled for the third quarter of 2010.

Although the existence of the tablet PC has been confirmed by LG representatives for Wall Street Journal, currently no other information about future ultra-portable. But company’s promises are, that it will be better than anything else on the market.

The technology firm LG Electronics has confirmed itself to have a Tablet PC based on Google’s Android in the works. To date, the firm should only appear on Windows 7 Tablet basis. Furthermore, given that the expected product is to be different than previous tablets.

The step in the direction of Android is not a big surprise: The operating system is well established and at a very mature level. With the integrated App Store, there may well compete with Apple’s trend devices.

Further details on the upcoming LG-tablet were previously not disclosed. In the fourth quarter of 2010, the unit will appear, perhaps there is indeed in advance of the IFA or elsewhere a few more information. Plans are also further smartphones with LG branding and Microsoft’s Windows 7 Phone, this, the company also agrees not covered.
